Introducing our new K-7 Program

Starting August 2019, Yukon home education elementary students will have the choice to take courses either through a distributed learning program offered directly through AVS or a traditional home education program. We have worked with members of the Yukon Home Education Society to develop a new made-in-Yukon K- 7 distributed learning program at AVS that will provide flexibility in where students learn with support from a certified Yukon teacher. The K- 7 program will complement the existing distributed learning programming AVS already offers for Grades 8-12 students.
Please contact Reid Levac at [email protected] or (867)456-6763 with any questions.

Distributed Learning Program

In the new K- 7 distributed learning program, the AVS elementary teacher will work in collaboration with the family to develop a Student Learning Plan tailored to the child and Yukon's curriculum requirements. The teacher will work with students and parents to meet with students one-on-one for one-hour every two weeks either in person, on the telephone or online. During this time, the teacher will provide feedback on student learning, view samples of student work, provide program planning and select engaging curricular resources based on students' interests and passions.

OWL (Optional Wednesday Learning)

Students will also be supported at AVS through regular Optional Wednesday Learning (OWL). During OWL, the teacher will lead instruction and assess and evaluate student learning on-site at AVS. This will be a great opportunity for students to socialize with other distributed learning students and gain opportunities to enhance their learning through activities such as Fine Art: Health: Robotics, Coding, and other STEM activities: and other subject-specific projects and activities. The OWLs will be open to all home education and distributed learning students. Distributed learning families can borrow from the AVS resource library anytime throughout the school year.

Student Learning Plans

The SLP is a working document set up at  the beginning of the school year.  Its main purpose is to establish a plan for your child’s learning that incorporates the big ideas, content areas, and learning standards of BC’s curriculum.

Our AVS teacher will  work alongside students and parents to co-create these learning plans and plan activities that fit each students’ unique individuality and provide flexibility and options for families. Ways of assessing your child’s learning will also be discussed and documented throughout the year.

There is a list of Student Learning Plan templates by grade under NEW K-7 Program.
