Homeschooling in Yukon

or Homeschooling is an alternative method of teaching where a parent delivers an educational program to children at home.

The Yukon Education Act (Section 31) provides parents with the statutory right to educate their children at home.
Homeschooling allows children to work at their own pace and parents to blend family, life and schoolwork into their own schedule.

Homeschooling programs are not,
  • Supervised by a Yukon teacher.
  • Formally Inspected by the Yukon Department of Education.
Homeschooling comes with great responsibility – choosing this option means parents must provide and supervise their child’s entire educational program, including curriculum and learning materials.

Online Learning (OL) / Distributed Learning (DL) should not be confused with Homeschooling. For more information on Online/Distributed Learning options in Yukon see AVS Online programming.

Roles and Responsibilities

In Yukon, parents must register homeschooled children with Aurora Virtual School (AVS) by September 30th each year.  Parents are also required to submit a Home Education Plan for each child being home schooled.

AVS will
register the child of any parent who wishes his or her child to be educated at home.  AVS has no authority to approve or supervise the educational program of a homeschooled child.  As outlined below, AVS can provide advice and support in a number of areas as requested by families.

Parents

According to the Yukon Education Act, homeschool parents are required to:
  • Register each homeschool child with Yukon Education (through AVS).
  • Prepare and submit an education plan for each student that outlines goals and learning activities.
  • Provide and supervise the educational program for their children.
  • Provide all the required learning materials to deliver the home education program.

AVS (Yukon Education)

AVS will offer the following to the homeschooled child or the parent:
  • registering students for homeschooling
  • processing of the Home Education Resource Fund application.
  • processing of the home education plan for each student.
  • evaluation and assessment services to determine the child's educational progress in relation to students of similar age and ability.
  • the loan of educational resource materials that are authorized and recommended by the Minister, and which, in the Department of Education’s opinion, are sufficient to enable the child to pursue his/her educational program. The school may require a deposit for the loan of such materials.

Additional Supports

At the request of families, AVS staff are happy to provide further support including:
  • advice for setting up a home education program
  • advice for creating educational plans
  • arranging for achievement testing and provincial exams (EYE, BOEYM, Grade Level Literacy and Numeracy Assessments, and Foundational Skills Assessments in Grade 4 and 7.
  • choosing educational resources
  • creating reports
  • scheduling with local public schools to take certain courses in your local school or online with AVS
  • borrowing textbooks and equipment from the Department of Education’s Resource Services unit
  • providing access to the ERAC Digital Classroom.
  • optional experiential learning opportunities.
